The Shared Sign

Curatorial note

The Shared Sign I is among the clearest statements of MeToo’s semiotic method. A limited palette of red, blue, black and off-white brings order to a crowded surface dominated by gender signs, circles, targets and hearts. The large central word does not explain the surrounding symbols; it acts as a point of return.

Because many of the signs imply categories, direction or pairing, the composition could easily become classificatory. Instead, overlap and repetition destabilise fixed assignments. The work treats identity as relational and combinatory: meaning is generated by proximity, recurrence and difference rather than by one isolated mark.
