CALM II
CALMCuratorial note
CALM II is built from a restricted chromatic register of aqua, black and off-white. Faces with closed eyes recur across the surface, accompanied by rain, waves, moons and open hands. At the centre, two hands approach one another with unusual delicacy, making contact — not withdrawal — the emotional hinge of the composition.
The repeated word CALM gradually shifts from language to pattern. Because the image is visually crowded, calm cannot mean the absence of stimulation. Instead it becomes the capacity to hold multiple signals at once. The work is strongest precisely because serenity is represented as regulation inside complexity.
